Louise Schul Receives 2022 Henry Ford II Scholar Award


Louise Schul, advised by John Doyle, Jean-Lou Chameau Professor of Control and Dynamical Systems, Electrical Engineering, and Bioengineering, is one of four recipients of the 2022 Henry Ford II Scholar Award. Louise is interested in multiple fields in electrical engineering, especially signal processing and optics. This summer, she will be working on a SURF project with Professor Alireza Marandi to improve a tunable laser source. After graduation, she plans to attend graduate school and eventually work in industry. The Henry Ford II Scholar Award is funded under an endowment provided by the Ford Motor Company Fund. The award is made annually to engineering students with the best academic record at the end of the third year of undergraduate study.

Carver Mead Awarded Kyoto Prize


Carver Mead, Gordon and Betty Moore Professor of Engineering and Applied Science, Emeritus, has been awarded the 2022 Kyoto Prize by the Inamori Foundation of Japan. According to the Inamori Foundation, he was awarded the honor for his "leading contributions to the establishment of the guiding principles for VLSI systems design." [Caltech story]

Professor Hajimiri Receives ASCIT Teaching Award


Ali Hajimiri, Bren Professor of Electrical Engineering and Medical Engineering; Co-Director, Space-Based Solar Power Project, has been chosen by the Associated Students of the California Institute of Technology (ASCIT) to receive a 2021-2022 ASCIT Teaching Award. Kuan-Chang Chen Wins Charles Wilts Prize


Kuan-Chang Chen, advised by Professor Azita Emami is a winner of this year's Charles Wilts Prize, for his doctoral thesis "Energy-Efficient Receiver Design for High-Speed Interconnects." The Charles Wilts Prize is awarded every year to a graduate student in Electrical Engineering for outstanding independent research.

Jin Sima Wins Charles Wilts Prize


Jin Sima, advised by Professor Jehoshua (Shuki) Bruck is a winner of this year's Charles Wilts Prize, for his doctoral thesis "Correcting Errors in DNA Storage." The Charles Wilts Prize is awarded every year to a graduate student in Electrical Engineering for outstanding independent research.

Nanofabrication Courses Let Caltech Undergraduates Get Hands-on at the Smallest Scales


The course combines topical lectures that give the students a preview of what they will be doing in the cleanroom along with hands-on practical training. Both components are conducted as a team effort between Scherer and the KNI technical staff. The first two lectures of the term were presented by KNI’s microscopist, Dr. Annalena Wolff, who lectured on scanning electron and focused ion beam microscopy. Additional lectures were presented by KNI’s Associate Director of Technical Operations, Dr. Guy DeRose, on electron beam lithography.

Researchers Help Generate First Image of Black Hole at the Center of Our Galaxy


A multi-institution collaboration that includes a Caltech-led imaging team has generated the first image of the supermassive black hole at the center of the Milky Way galaxy. This result provides conclusive evidence that the body, known as Sagittarius A* (Sgr A*, pronounced "sadge-ay-star"), is indeed a black hole and yields valuable clues about the workings of such massive objects, which are thought to reside at the center of most galaxies. "We not only recovered an image of Sgr A*, but also characterized the uncertainty of features in the image," says He Sun. "This analysis helped the team deliver scientific results with some guarantees." [Caltech story]

Pioneering New Frontiers in Topological Physics

The Grid Gets Smart


Adaptive electric vehicle chargers and advanced battery designs are some of the ways Caltech researchers are building a more sustainable electric grid. Steven Low, Frank J. Gilloon Professor of Computing and Mathematical Sciences and Electrical Engineering, invented the Adaptive Charging Network (ACN). But Low and others warn that this grid is unprepared for the challenges of the 21st century. “The current grid will very soon hit a wall where, when we add renewable energy, it sits unused because the demand isn’t there at a time when the solar is running,” says Adam Wierman, Professor of Computing and Mathematical Sciences; Director, Information Science and Technology. That is why Caltech researchers are working on ways to break down that barrier to help empower an energy transformation. Julia R. Saehui Hwang Receives Thomas J. Watson Fellowship


Saehui Hwang, a senior in electrical engineering, has been selected to receive a Thomas J. Watson Fellowship, a grant that offers graduating seniors the opportunity to pursue academic scholarship abroad. Hwang is one of just 42 students to receive the fellowship this year. The Thomas J. Wat­son Fel­low­ship is a one-year grant for pur­pose­ful, inde­pen­dent explo­ration out­side the Unit­ed States, award­ed to grad­u­at­ing seniors nom­i­nat­ed by one of 41 part­ner insti­tu­tions. Hwang will spend a year abroad working on a series of projects related to the design of wearable devices. "Ultimately, my career goal is to be an engineer who designs solutions with global impact," says Hwang. [Caltech story]
