Jelena Vuckovic
Associate Professor of Electrical Engineering, Stanford University

Jelena Vuckovic was born in Nis, Serbia (former Yugoslavia), and was educated at the Faculty of Electronic Engineering of the University of Nis, Serbia, before coming to Caltech, where she received MSc and PhD degrees in Electrical Engineering in 1997 and 2002, respectively (working in the group of Professor Axel Scherer). After graduating from Caltech, she spent a year (2002) working as a postdoctoral scholar in Applied Physics at Stanford University. In 2003, she joined the faculty in the Electrical Engineering Department and Ginzton Laboratory at Stanford, where she is currently an Associate Professor (with tenure) and a Chambers Faculty Scholar, and leads the Nanoscale and Quantum Photonics research group. She currently has 10 PhD students and two postdocs, who (in addition to her two year old daughter) keep her busy these days.

Jelena is a recipient of several awards, including the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE) - the highest honor for young scientists and engineers in the USA, the Office of Naval Research Young Investigator Award, the DARPA Young Faculty Award, the Frederic E. Terman Fellowship given to the most promising young faculty in sciences and engineering at Stanford, and the Teaching Excellence Award from the Stanford Society of Women Engineers.
